The Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy –
is a not-for-profit organisation based in Khayelitsha, South Africa.
We use our cycling-based programs to involve township youth in a positive, after-school activity. Our aim is to give children from disadvantaged communities the skills and opportunities they need to make a success of their lives. We use the sport of cycling to teach them important life skills such as discipline, determination, dedication, teamwork and how to win and lose. Sport also teaches children about resilience and perseverance; it gives them the opportunity to become physically and emotionally stronger and it also teaches them to strive for excellence, to be gracious in victory and to persevere in defeat. In other words, it help us grow champions on and off the bike.
Since 2017 to date – Jamtech Racing has taken on the role to mentor and develop both rode and BMX based riders into the exciting world of mountain biking. With a rich and hungry talent base, we have successfully implemented a program whereby we take 12 riders out of the township environment out onto mountain biking trails in & around the Cape Town area –
· 6am pickup from the Khayalitsha facility
· 1-hour skills & technique development,
· Trail awareness and etiquette
· Bicycle maintenance and care
· 20km – 35km ride
· Lunch followed by a debrief
· Lunch time drop off at the Khayalitsha facility
Upon implementation we noticed the kids bikes were in bad shape and desperately needed maintenance. From our club funds raised, We have purchased and carried out maintenance and serviced all 12 bicycles which now enables the kids to ride more confidently and increases the safety as they progress onto the more technical single tracks.
The Velokhaya Cycling Academy has in excess of 50 active members & based on the popularity of our program there is a shortage usable bikes –
With proceeds from our club events hosted in 2017, Jamtech Racing has purchased 3 additional second hand mountain bikes to enable the additional kids to join in the program.
